86. Visit ten new restaurants

Current Progress: 7/10

While in Washington yesterday we lunched at Rosa Mexicano. We chose it purely based on its proximity to the Shakespeare Theater, but it proved to be a good decision. The wait staff was all smiles, and when we arrived the first thing they did was offer us some freshly made guacamole. It's not complimentary (nor did we expect it to be), but it was worth every penny.

Preparing the guac.

The guacamole came with both chips and mini soft tortillas, as well as two very spicy sauces to add to your guac experience should you so choose. I didn't like them: the tomatilla was too sour and the red stuff tasted like campfire ashes. But the guac itself was just so good.

Blurry guac. (My cell phone fails in low light.)

Anyway, I ordered from the "favorites" section of the menu, and got Chicken Tortilla Pie. My husband got the chicken enchiladas. Both were outstanding. The rice and beans were good too, much different from what I was used to (the beans were black, not pinto, and the rice was yellow with cilantro and other spices, not Spanish). I ate way too much but it's difficult to stop when it's just so tasty! And at roughly $15/plate it's very reasonable, especially for Washington.

My entree: funny-colored but delicious.

My husband, who lived in Texas for a time, declared it was the first authentic Mexican food he'd had since moving to the area. (It's very easy to get good, say, Peruvian or El Salvadorian food, but Mexican? Not so much.) We're glad to have found this place, and will definitely eat there again.
