85. Attend 5 plays

Date Completed: 20 August 2011

My husband and I saw Ain't Misbehavin' performed by the Elden Street Players in Herndon, VA. We hadn't realized this theater even existed, even though it's in the same plaza as the scene shop for the group my husband has worked with numerous times in the past.

Seeing this show was a bit of a last-minute decision: we were looking for something to do on a Saturday night and I happened to pull up this handy-dandy local resource to see what was playing in the area. In the end it came down to location: we weren't really in the mood to make an excursion out to Maryland or into DC. So we went into it fairly blind: I was quite familiar with much of the music (all of which was by Fats Waller), but I didn't know anything else about it.

It turned out to be less the standard musical than a musical review: no plot and almost no dialogue, just one song after another. That said, the hilarious banter, wild choreography, and frequent costume changes kept things interesting. And it certainly didn't hurt that there was a whole lot of talent crammed on one stage. I'd recommend everybody else see it, except that we were there for closing night, so you can't. But if you like jazz and ragtime of the 1920s and '30s, try to see this one sometime. It's a whole lot of fun.
