Thing 101: A Midsummer Night's Dream
Jan. 9th, 2011 11:06 am101. Watch the DVDs I own but have never seen.
A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of those Shakespeare plays I've seen multiple times, but I'm always fascinated by new interpretations. This film is set in the early 19th century. It appears to be set in Italy, though the play itself is clearly set in Athens, Greece. But that doesn't really matter. The costumes are marvelous and you can tell everyone involved is having a grand old time, especially Stanley Tucci as Puck and Kevin Kline as Bottom. Calista Flockhart is surprisingly convincing as the angsty Helena as well, though much of the rest of the cast is fairly forgettable. In short, it's a good adaptation, a great costume drama, and a fun way to spend a few hours.
